The department is led by Dr. Vyacheslav V. Matsello.

Main subjects of the department include (but are not limited by) labeling problems, 2D context-free grammars, structural recognition etc. and their applications, some of which are listed below.

In 1957, Institute of Academy of Science of Ukraine was created in Kyiv for research works in Computer Science, which started in Ukraine at the end of the 40’th.

In 1962, Institute of Cybernetics was founded on the base of the center. A matter of research involved practically all possible directions in a modern cybernetics and computer science. The laboratory of image processing and recognition was created as a part of the institution.

At the end of the 90’th Institute was restructured, and the International Research and Training Centre for Informational Technologies and Systems was founded. The laboratory of image processing and recognition became a department of the Centre.

Since 2025, the International Research and Training Centre for Informational Technologies and Systems has changed its name. From now on — the Institute of Information Technologies and Systems of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
