Notable Contributions:

  • 1968 Proposed an unsupervised learning algorithm that soon became known as the EM-algorithm in the peer-reviewed article „The interaction of learning and self-organization in pattern recognition”;
  • One of the first to propose applying LP relaxation to MRF optimization. The claim was supported by reputable authors in scientific works, including „A Linear Programming Approach to Max-sum Problem: A Review” and „An Analysis of Convex Relaxations for MAP Estimation”;
  • 2002 Textbook „Ten Lectures on Statistical and Structural Pattern Recognition,” Michail I. Schlesinger, Václav Hlaváč, originally in Czech („Deset přednášek z teorie statistického a strukturálního rozpoznávání”, 1999), also translated to Russian („Десять лекций по статистическому и структурному распознаванию”, 2004);
